Staying Inside Your Life: What Longevity Means to Me
When we say longevity we almost always mean one thing: how do we live longer? But while we live longer, do we also get to stay inside the life we are living? My own definition of longevity, and the question Authentic Longevity began with.
We want to live longer, and we also want to stay inside the life we are living.
When people say longevity, one question usually comes to mind: how do we live longer?
Scientists have been chasing that answer for years. New medicines are developed, eating patterns are proposed, exercise programs are designed, and the biology of aging is understood a little better every day.
I prefer to approach the question from a different place. Because for me the real question is this: while we live longer, do we also want to stay inside the life we are living for longer?
This is the question Authentic Longevity began with.
Staying Inside Your Life
For me, aging well has less to do with the number on the calendar than with how we go on existing inside our own life.
Staying inside your life is being able to wake on your own in the morning. To climb the stairs. To read a book. To learn something new. To share laughter with the people you love. To set off on a journey. To make things. To keep being curious. And to do all of it without drifting away from yourself.
Perhaps that is what a long life really means.
Why Does Health Matter So Much?
At Authentic Longevity, health is not at the centre. That may sound surprising at first. Because for us health is not the goal; it is the means.
Let our muscles be strong so that we can walk. Let our heart be healthy so that we can travel. Let our mind stay alive so that we can keep thinking and learning. Let us sleep well so that we can begin the next day with energy.
We protect our health because we want to go on living the life we want to live.
Every Age Has Its Own Beginning
Sometimes I am asked: am I too late to start this journey? My answer is always the same: no.
Because Authentic Longevity does not belong to one age group. Habits built when we are young certainly form a strong foundation. But it is also possible to make changes that improve quality of life at forty five, at sixty, at seventy five.
What matters is not your date of birth, but the decision you make today.
Racing Only Ourselves
Authentic Longevity does not ask you to compete with anyone else. It asks you to take small but sustainable steps between who you were yesterday and who you are today.
To move a little more. To rest a little better. To eat a little more mindfully. To read more. To laugh more. To share more.
Because a long life is not only a biological process. It is the quality of the life we live.
A Closing Word
I do not see Authentic Longevity as a diet plan. Nor as an exercise program. For me it is a philosophy of living.
Whatever our age: to keep staying inside life. To live as ourselves. And to move a little closer to ourselves as we grow older. That is my definition of longevity.
Am I building a life today that I will still want to be living tomorrow?
